Driver arrested after officer injured in hit-and-run at Greenacre, NSW

A man has been arrested this morning by police investigating the alleged hit-and-run of an officer in Sydney’s south last month, NSW Police say.

About 7.50pm on Tuesday 5 September 2017, police attached to the Traffic & Highway Patrol Command were conducting speed enforcement duties on Roberts Road at Greenacre.

Just before 8.30pm, a car was detected allegedly speeding at 121km/h near Rebecca Road.

A senior constable – wearing an approved reflective vest and holding a torch – held out a ‘Stop Police’ sign and signalled for the driver to pull over.

The driver allegedly sped up to overtake a taxi and struck the senior constable; the vehicle did not stop.

The officer was taken to Concord Hospital in a stable condition, suffering injuries to his hands and legs; he was released 24 hours later after being treated for soft-tissue injuries.

Following extensive investigation by officers from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit, a 22-year-old man was arrested at a home in Greystanes about 7am tomorrow.

He was taken to Merrylands Police Station where he is currently assisting with inquiries.
