A Naracoorte man will face court on several charges following a fatal crash yesterday afternoon in the state's south-east, according to SA Police.
Just before 4.30pm Saturday 1 September police and emergency services were called to Riddoch Highway, approximately 4km north of Naracoorte, after a car crashed into a barrier before rolling off the road and colliding with a stobie pole.
Sadly, a passenger in the vehicle, a 23-year-old man from Victoria, died at the scene. The driver of the car, an 18-year-old man, was taken to the Naracoorte Hospital with minor injuries. The second passenger, a 22-year-old man, sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to the Naracoorte Hospital before being flown to the Flinders Medical Centre.
Last night, Major Crash Investigators arrested the driver, an 18-year-old man from Naracoorte and charged him with aggravated cause death and cause injury by dangerous driving, driving unlicensed, plus drink driving after he allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.107 or more than double the legal limit of 0.05.
The arrested man has been refused police bail and will appear in the Mt Gambier Magistrates Court on Monday 3 September.
The man’s death takes the State’s road toll to 47, compared to 65 at the same time last year.
