A man has died in a two-vehicle crash in the state's New England region.

About 12.30pm today (Saturday 9 August 2025), emergency services were called to the Gwydir Highway, Swan Vale, about 70km east of Inverell, following reports of a crash.

Officers attached to New England Police District attended and found a Ford Ranger utility collided head-on with a B-double combination semi-trailer.

The driver of the utility – a man aged in his 20s, was trapped in the vehicle until being removed by emergency services personnel but could not be revived and died at the scene.

A 22-year-old female passenger in the utility was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance Paramedics before being airlifted to Gold Coast hospital with spinal and internal injuries.

The driver of the semi-trailer - a 57-year-old man – was not injured and was taken to Inverell hospital for mandatory testing.

The Gwydir Highway was closed in both directions whilst police commenced an investigation into the circumstances of the crash.

As investigations continue, anyone who witnessed the crash or has dash-cam footage, ia asked to call Inverell Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
