Driver faces charges after fatal crash at Hurstville

The driver of a Nissan coupe is facing five charges after a passenger died and another was injured in a crash in the St George area last year.

Emergency services were called to King Georges Road at Hurstville, near the intersection of Belmont Avenue, shortly after 2am on Saturday 8 August 2020, after a purple Nissan 200SX left the roadway and hit a power pole. The impact snapped the power pole in half.

The front seat passenger, a 19-year-old man, died at the scene. A backseat passenger, an 18-year-old man, suffered a fractured leg.

Officers from St George Police Area Command attended and commenced inquiries, with assistance from the Crash Investigation Unit.

The driver, a 19-year-old man from Mortdale, suffered serious injuries to his pelvis and abdomen and was taken to St George Hospital for surgery.

Following inquiries by the Crash Investigation Unit, the man has been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death – dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, cause actual bodily harm by misconduct, negligent driving occasioning death and negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm.

He is due to appear before Sutherland Local Court on Thursday 18 March 2021.

The man's driver's licence has also been suspended.
