Drivers caught with drugs and alcohol in system, SA

Police detected 13 motorists with either alcohol or drugs in their system yesterday as SAPOL continue to focus on driver testing near schools across the state, according to SA Police.

Police conducted 2076 breath tests across all Local Service Areas, with one driver – a 42-year-old man in the South Coast area - testing positive for alcohol allegedly recording a reading of 0.185 or more than three times over the legal limit.

While 12 drivers tested positive to illicit drugs from 258 tests.

  • A 26-year-old woman in the Yorke Mid North region who was positive to both Methylamphetamine and cannabis who had just dropped children off at school.
  • A 40-year-old woman in the Eyre Western LSA who tested positive for Methylamphetamine and had dropped children off and had another in the vehicle.
  • A 39-year-old woman in Adelaide’s south who tested positive for Methylamphetamine and had just dropped children at school.
  • A 35-year-old man in Adelaide’s south who tested positive for Methylamphetamine.
  • A 43-year-old man in Adelaide’s east who tested positive for Methylamphetamine and had children in the car.
  • A 44-year-old woman in Adelaide’s west who tested positive for Methylamphetamine. She was also driving unregistered and unlicenced.
  • A 46-year-old man from Adelaide’s north who tested positive for Methylamphetamine.
  • A 45-year-old man from the Fleurieu region who tested positive for Methylamphetamine was dropping off children at school.
  • A 43-year-old man from Adelaide northern suburbs tested positive to Methylamphetamine after he had picked up two children from school.
  • A 26-year-old woman from Adelaide's northern suburbs tested positive to Methylamphetamine and had a small child in the vehicle.
  • A 37-year-old man from the State's Mid-North tested positive to cannabis after picking up a child from a local school.
  • A 37-year-old man from the State's Mid-North tested positive to Methylamphetamine.

A driver was also arrested by police in Adelaide’s south on a warrant. The 39-year-old man had just dropped a child off at a primary school and was allegedly driving a stolen car and was in possession of methamphetamine.

Drivers and riders are reminded that they can be stopped at random by a police officer anywhere at any time in metro and regional SA and tested for alcohol and illicit drugs.

Under the Road Traffic Act 1961, it is an offence for a motorist to drive or attempt to drive a motor vehicle with THC (Cannabis), Methylamphetamine (Speed, Ice or Crystal Meth) or MDMA (Ecstasy) present in their oral fluid or blood.

Unlike the .05 blood alcohol limit, there is no limit when it comes to drugs. It is an offence to get behind the wheel with illicit drugs in your system.

Families SA have been advised of the detections where children were involved

Anyone who tested positive to illicit drugs is expected to face consequences after the completion of forensic testing.
