Drone down and drowned

The Water Police were called in for an early morning rescue today after a photography shoot didn’t go to plan, Victoria Police say.

The marine unit and local police were called to St Kilda pier following reports a man was in the water, about half way up the pier, and couldn’t get out about 2.45am.

Police have been told the 22-year-old man was with a friend and preparing to take photos with a drone as part of a project when the drone fell into the water.

After fruitless attempts to retrieve the drone from the safety of the pier the South Yarra man stripped down to his undies and jumped in.

The drone rescue quickly turned into a scramble to get the man out due to the coldness of the water.

He was cramping and too cold to move and was not able to get back up to the pier as there was no ladder.

A passer-by together with the friend tied clothing together forming a make-shift rope which the man managed to hold onto until police arrived and retrieved him from the water.

It is believed the man was in the water for about 30 minutes.

He has been taken to hospital suffering from the cold.

Unfortunately he was not able to save the drone which is now in the depths of the bay.
