The 2026 East Gippsland Australia Day Awards have recognised the incredible spirit of local communities, honouring events and initiatives that bring people together, celebrate local culture, and make a real difference in residents' lives.
The inaugural Special Recognition Award went to the East Gippsland Winter Festival, celebrating its long-standing role in connecting communities across the shire. Year after year, the festival delivers high-quality, inclusive events that residents and visitors alike look forward to and cherish. Previously, a recipient of the Community Event of the Year Award, the festival continues to inspire participation, connection, and celebration across East Gippsland.
The 2026 Community Event of the Year award goes to the Breast Care Support Fund of East Gippsland. This volunteer-driven initiative provides vital support for families affected by breast cancer, including groceries, fuel, and meal vouchers, as well as wigs, mastectomy bras, and beauty treatments. Guided by the local McGrath Breast Care Nurse at Bairnsdale Regional Health Service, all assistance is delivered confidentially and where it's needed most.
Recent fundraisers, including a 50 Shades of Pink Party and a high tea at Rivendell Farm Estate, raised a combined $25,000, all spent locally to support East Gippsland businesses and families. What sets this group apart is their dedication, generosity, and inclusive spirit. Every volunteer contributes time, energy, and care, ensuring the community feels seen, supported, and valued. Their work embodies leadership, compassion, and the power of "local supporting local," bringing the community together in a way that inspires us all.
Mayor Jodie Ashworth said both recipients demonstrate the very best of East Gippsland's community spirit.
"From large-scale celebrations to quiet, thoughtful support for families in need, these events and initiatives show how communities can come together, care for one another, and make a real difference in people's lives," Mayor Ashworth said.
These awards highlight the creativity, commitment, and generosity that strengthen East Gippsland and ensure our communities continue to thrive.
