Electric vehicle start-up, a boost for jobs in SA

The Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union (AMWU) is looking forward to a new era in vehicle building in South Australia with the announcement that electric vehicle start-up ACE-EV will begin production of light commercial vehicles.

AMWU Assistant SA Secretary Scott Bachelor said South Australia was hit hard by the Coalition's appalling decision to kill off the car industry under then Prime Minister Tony Abbot and Treasurer Joe Hockey.

"We welcome any new entrant seeking to restart the car industry, create jobs and utilise the skills and experience of South Australian vehicle builders," Mr Bachelor said.

"Bill Shorten has now put his support behind the move to electric vehicles as a key plank of Labor's manufacturing policy."

"Labor's policy and ACE-EV's business plan will create new job opportunities for skilled workers and young people seeking to take up apprenticeships."

Mr Bachelor said ACE-EV's entrance into the electric vehicle industry was an encouraging sign that vehicle building would once again become a major employer in SA.

"Electric vehicles are fast becoming the technology of the future and South Australian workers are ready for the challenge," he said.
