Elizabeth CBD Sports Venue Under Planning Assessment

Planning assessment underway for Elizabeth CBD sports entertainment venue

Following a planning application submission by Pelligra Group, a public notification period is underway for an application that proposes a sports entertainment venue in the heart of the Elizabeth CBD.

Located on the corner of Main North Road and Philip Highway, Pelligra's development includes an indoor ice sports arena, elite rock-climbing facility, two indoor sports courts and gymnasium, supported by a restaurant and other hospitality tenancies.

The sports entertainment venue supports Council's vision to reshape the CBD into a vibrant and cosmopolitan centre, providing a destination where people can stay and play longer and enjoy a range of leisure and recreational services.

City of Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty said it was positive to see Pelligra move the project forward.

"From what we have seen in Pelligra's design plans, the community can expect something truly exciting and in line with what they have been telling us for some time - that they want more offerings and activities in the one place," Mayor Docherty said.

"With seven people moving to Playford each day and expected to continue for the next 20 years, this sports entertainment venue will provide a place for our residents - and visitors beyond Playford's borders - to socialise and connect."

Pelligra was granted planning consent from the Council Assessment Panel in June 2023 to develop a second site in the CBD, the Playford Innovation Hub (adjacent to the Windsor Carpark), with other sites flagged for development to provide a contemporary and thriving city centre.

As part of Council's commitment to delivering a vibrant city centre, work is being undertaken that will see an uplift to the wider public realm in and around private developments.

"We want to ensure that as private development occurs in the heart of Elizabeth, our public spaces are also improved," said Mayor Docherty. "In this case it means enhancing connectivity and accessibility to and from the CBD, creating outdoor community gathering spots and uplifting existing natural spaces like Fremont Park and the Main North Road corridors to create a connected CBD precinct."

The public notification period for the sports entertainment venue will run from Monday 08 January to Friday 29 January and allows the community to contribute to the planning process, in line with the Planning and Design Code and Planning, Development and Infrastructure Act 2016. The development will be assessed by Council's independent Assessment Panel in early 2024.
