Emerald airport upgrade now complete

Emerald Airport's $6 million upgrade is now complete, making this important gateway to Queensland's Central Highlands region safer and more accessible for travellers.

The project was funded under the Liberal and Nationals Government's Regional Airports Screening Infrastructure (RASI) program, which assists regional airports with the unavoidable costs of new enhanced screening equipment, plus a contribution towards initial operating costs.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Barnaby Joyce said the upgrades would ensure Emerald Airport is ready to welcome increased passenger and flight numbers when more Australians can travel again.

"Through the Regional Airports Screening Infrastructure program, the Government is helping regional airports to manage the passenger screening costs," the Deputy Prime Minister said.

"This is all about keeping airports like Emerald's finances on an even keel while also keeping the travelling public safe."

"This is one of the toughest times our aviation sector has faced, which is why our Government is continuing to work hard to deliver the support needed to keep our vital regional airports like Emerald running and supporting local communities."

Federal Member for Flynn Ken O'Dowd said works included extending the existing terminal building, upgrading terminal facilities, repositioning the passenger drop-off zone, and other works to meet security requirements.

"This grant is also a big win for the flying public, as it means screening costs don't flow through to ticket prices, making it cheaper to visit friends and family.

"This is just another way the Federal Liberal and Nationals Government is supporting the visitor economy, with Central Queensland well positioned to reap the benefits as borders reopen and Aussies start travelling around our beautiful state once more.

"We all know how vital Emerald Airport is to keep our community connected to services and other communities, get our local goods to markets and ensure our economy thrives now and into the future, which is why we continue to get funding like this out the door."

The Liberal and Nationals Government has provided more than $5.1 billion in financial assistance to the aviation sector since the COVID-19 pandemic began. RASI funding is a key part of that - helping airports meet crucial security requirements for travellers.
