Emergency flights secure as Kempsey Airport to close for two days

Kempsey Shire Council as owners and operators of Kempsey Airport will be closing the airport for two days in April for important maintenance works.

The Council will be undertaking routine maintenance work (crack sealing and linemarking) on the main runway and taxiway at the airport on:

  • Tuesday 7th April - 6am to 5pm
  • Wednesday 8th April - 6am to 1pm

The airport will need to be closed for the works to be conducted at these times, which are subject to change.

Although not directly affected, the grass cross runway will also be closed during this time, as aircraft landing on this runway must track along the sealed runway and the taxiway, which will be both subject to maintenance.

Key stakeholders have been contacted directly regarding the closure to ensure there is no undue negative impact on plans. This has included the flying club, RFS, aeromedical services and commercial business operators that lease a facility at the airport or regularly use the airport.

Emergency and aeromedical services have confirmed that they have no concerns regarding the proposal and are able to continue their services during the closure period through use of Port Macquarie airport or helicopter if required.

In the event of unfavourable weather, major bushfire or other emergency event, Council may postpone the works. Further updates will be provided if this occurs.

Council are grateful for the understanding and cooperation of all concerned in working around the closure.
