EPA fines Wyong waste facility $15,000 for outdoor waste storage

The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has fined Alcon Disposals Pty $15,000 for allegedly storing solid waste in an outdoor area, contrary to the conditions of its environment protection licence.

Alcon Disposals holds an environment protection licence to operate the waste facility at Lucca Road, Wyong.

During an inspection in December 2017 to monitor compliance with licence conditions EPA officers found that a large stockpile of scrap steel was stored outside, and another waste stockpile (consisting of soil, shredded timber, plastic and steel) was stored under an awning.

It is a condition of the licence that the facility store waste indoors to prevent dust and ensure waste is appropriately contained. The stockpile storage practices were in breach of the licence conditions, and the EPA issued a $15,000 fine.

EPA Manager Regional Waste Compliance Cate Woods said licence conditions needed to be met to ensure the environment and community were not unduly impacted.

"The requirement to store waste in indoor areas is not a recommendation but a strict licence condition. Any licensed NSW waste facility should expect EPA regulatory action if they do not abide by the conditions of their licence." ---
