Evade police and stolen vehicle charges, Smithfield

Police charged a 23-year-old Smithfield man with one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, evade police and fail to provide a specimen of blood whilst a 31-year-old Yorkeys Knob woman was charged with one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and breach of bail.

Police allege a blue Landrover was loaned to another man known to the owner on October 15 and later reported stolen by the owner when it wasn't returned on October 20.

Police were conducting static surveillance of the Captain Cook Highway at Smithfield when they observed the vehicle travel north and disappear into Cumberland Avenue at about 1am today.

Police did not attempt to intercept the vehicle and recommenced patrols along the Captain Cook Highway.

Police allege they observed the vehicle again on Mt Millman Drive Smithfield at about 1.30am today when they attempted to intercept the vehicle.

It's alleged the 23-year-old man refused to stop and drove into a carpark and behind an unoccupied commercial property off Mt Millman Drive, Smithfield.

Police allege the man and his 31-year-old female passenger refused to comply with police directions.

Both occupants were verbally challenged by police and it's alleged they refused to unlock the vehicle.

Police gained entry to the vehicle by smashing the drivers window and both people were restrained without injury to any persons.

The man is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on November 8, whilst the woman is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court today.
