Evade police charges in Townsville, QLD

A man has been charged following investigations into an alleged evade incident in Townsville last night, Queensland Police say.

It will be alleged police were conducting patrols as part of Operation Oscar Merchant when they observed a silver Mitsubishi Lancer travelling at excessive speed on Riverway Drive, Kelso around 11.40pm.

The vehicle failed to stop for police and sped off.

A short time later police observed the same vehicle driving in the opposite direction on Riverway Drive.

The vehicle then turned into Hammond Way and stopped.

As police approached the vehicle it is alleged the driver accelerated and sped off before turning into Garnet Street.

The vehicle was located in Upper Miles Avenue where the male driver was taken into custody.

A 36-year-old Heatley man has been served with a Notice to Appear on one charge each of failing to stop a motor vehicle and driving whilst unlicensed.

He will appear in Townsville Magistrates Court on October 12.
