The Tasmanian Government understands the importance of Tasmania's arts sector and we have provided significant support during what has been a challenging year for the industry.
We have been working closely with Public Health on a pathway for a safe return to theatre productions as close to full capacity as possible.
Today I am pleased to announce that theatre and cinema capacity limits have been expanded to 75 per cent, up to a maximum of 250 people from Monday, 21 December 2020.
Venues where a 75 per cent capacity will take the crowd beyond 250 people will need to gain approval from Public Health before they can operate at an increased capacity. Subject to approval, these venues will be able to proceed at the expanded capacity from 1 February 2021.
Today we are also announcing a program for the Tasmanian Government to share some of the financial risks associated with the reintroduction of live performances for our performing arts companies and venues.
This announcement means that if restrictions do need to be re-applied to protect the Tasmanian community from COVID-19, financial assistance will be made available to help manage costs associated with cancellations.
The details of this scheme to share the risk are currently being finalised and will be confirmed in the New Year. It will be supported by a $2 million package and will allow companies to apply for a grant of up to $100,000 should performances need to be cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.
I'm confident today's announcement will be welcomed news for Tasmania's cultural and creative sector.
