Experts Convene for Domestic Violence Prevention Talks

SA Gov

Leading voices from government, business, academia, health and Aboriginal organisations, as well as national advocacy group, Our Watch, will share insights on domestic, family and sexual violence prevention at a roundtable event in Adelaide today at the South Australian Museum.

The discussion comes ahead of the impending release of the findings from South Australia's Royal Commission into Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence.

The collective expertise will be key to identifying new opportunities for strengthening the foundations of domestic, family and sexual violence prevention across South Australia.

Prevention is one of the five areas the state's Royal Commission into Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence has been asked to inquire into, alongside intervention, response, recovery and healing, and coordination.

Since July 2024, the Royal Commission has been diligently gathering information from services, survivors and communities with the goal of bringing an end to this insidious violence that disproportionately affects women and children.

The Prevention Roundtable, held a week after the eSafety and Image-Based Abuse Roundtable, demonstrates the State Government's commitment to tackle perpetrator behaviour and all that leads to violence and find ways to improve responses, services and legislation in South Australia to help save lives.

As put by Katrine Hildyard

We are convening this roundtable together because action built on shared insight and commitment can help make our community safe for everyone. We need every person involved in driving real and lasting change in South Australia and this Roundtable will explore how they can be.

The Royal Commission, which provides generational opportunity for change, is soon to hand down its findings, but we're not waiting to act. We're working now and have worked relentlessly since coming to government, shaping what happens next and making sure prevention sits at the heart of every action.

To every person at the roundtable today and every person in our community who is playing their role in prevention, I say thank you. This is how change happens - when people show up, work together and demand better. That's what this roundtable is about.

As put by Patty Kinnersly, CEO Our Watch

We are at a turning point. The Royal Commission will chart the path forward, and this roundtable is about making sure we are ready to walk that path together.

South Australia has the opportunity to lead the country in prevention, but it will require long-term investment, cross-sector collaboration and clear commitment to embedding prevention across all parts of community life.
