Tasmanian Labor
  • More evidence the Liberals can't deliver infrastructure
  • Libs plan to 'build a way out of COVID' under a cloud
  • Peter Gutwein's lack of transparency on show again
  • A key report released late today demonstrates again that the State Liberal Government is unable to deliver on its infrastructure promises.

Shadow Treasurer David O'Byrne said the chronic inability of the government to deliver key infrastructure projects casts significant doubt on its COVID recovery plan.

"Peter Gutwein and Michael Ferguson say they will build their way out of COVID. Yet report after report shows significant underspending on infrastructure, failing to deliver even 'business as usual' projects.

"In the last financial year they spent only $500 million of the budgeted $700 million. How do they think they're going to deliver the infrastructure projects they've promised in their COVID construction blitz?

"They've pinned Tasmania's economic recovery, and the creation of thousands of jobs, on something they demonstrably can't deliver.

"Not only that, but Peter Gutwein has demonstrated again today his trademark aversion to transparency, releasing a significant economic report late on a Friday afternoon, on the last possible business day it was possible for the report to be released.

"The Premier and Treasurer, Peter Gutwein, must turn his mind to how he will create the jobs Tasmania so badly needs.

"The State Budget will be judged by whether it sets out a plan to create jobs across the economy, not just in the construction sector."
