Fake $50 Notes Still Circulating The Hobart Area – Businesses Are Warned To Be Vigilant, TAS

Police are renewing their advice for businesses to be on the lookout for counterfeit $50 notes after 16 further incidents of distinctively fake notes tendered this week, Tasmania Police say.

"Following our initial advice last month, pleasingly some businesses have been alert for counterfeit notes and have refused to accept them," said Detective Senior Sergeant Jim Semmens.

"Regrettably though there continues to be businesses who accept the fakes because they are not being vigilant."

"In the case of these notes, which feature prominent Chinese characters printed on both sides, it is particularly easy for a business to quickly identify a note as fake."

"It is timely to remind all businesses of the need to be vigilant for counterfeit money, and if they have received a fake note to keep it and contact Tasmania Police on 131 444."

Police are following avenues of enquiry in relation to the tendered counterfeit notes including a review of CCTV footage of several of the transactions.

Anyone with information relating to the counterfeit notes is asked to contact Hobart CIB on 131 444 or report it anonymously to Crime Stoppers.
