Far North District police officers recognised in awards ceremony

At a ceremony held at the Cairns Regional council today, Queensland Police(QPS), Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Queensland Fire and Emergency Serves (QPES) employees and staff were recognised for their outstanding contributions to their respective services.

Present at today’s ceremony was the Honourable Mr Curtis Pitt, Member for Cairns Mr Michael Healy, Assistant Commissioner John Bolger (QFES), Chief Superintendent Brett Schafferius (QPS), Commander Sharon Cowden (AFP) and Member for Cook Ms Cynthia Lui.

Over 46 award recipients, consisting of sworn officers and staff members received their awards today in the presence of colleagues, family members and friends.

Senior Constables Daniel Fysh and Jeremy Carter were awarded Queensland Police Bravery medals for rescuing a man who had jumped into the Barron River on 13 June, 2013.

After observing the man struggling to keep his head above water, Senior Constable Fysh swam halfway across the river to rescue him. Arriving only a short time later, Senior Constable Carter also entered the water to assist his colleague and recover the man from the river ultimately saving his life.

Receiving the Queensland Police Meritorious Medal today were Officer in Charge of Cooktown Police Station, Senior Sergeant John McArthur and Thursday Island Detective Sergeant Kristy Wilson. Both were recognised for their outstanding service delivery in their roles and commitment to working with and improving their local communities.

Sergeant Stephen Tillett was awarded The Queensland Police Exemplary Conduct Medal for his outstanding work as the Officer in Charge of the Cross Cultural Liaison Unit.

Celebrating over 40-year service with the QPS, Inspector Peter Mansfield and Senior Sergeant John Naess were awarded the QPS 40 Years’ Service Clasp signifying four decades of diligent and ethical service to the community of Queensland.

The awards ceremony was followed with a morning tea and an opportunity to recognise and thank family members providing support to officers and staff members.
