Fatal aviation incident at Mareeba

Police will prepare a report for the coroner after two men died in a light plane crash at Mareeba today (December 14).

Soon after 11am a small plane crashed into a cornfield near the Mareeba airport and adjacent to Ray Road.

Both men – the pilot, a 73-year-old man from Cooktown and his passenger, a 63-year-old man from Stuart, were pronounced deceased at the scene.

Investigations by the Forensic Crash Unit are continuing with police appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash, or heard the aircraft prior to the crash, to contact them (details below).
