Fatal Crash- Pirie Street, New Town., TAS

At 9pm on Thursday 22/6/2017, Police were alerted to a two vehicle crash on Pirie Street, Newtown at the intersection of Roope Street.  A grey Mitsubishi Magna Sedan and a Blue Holden Commodore collided at the intersection, with the impact forcing both cars to the adjacent footpath.  The driver and front passenger of the Magna fled the scene prior to the arrival of emergency personnel, Tasmania Police say.

The 42 year old female driver of the Commodore has been entangled in the wreckage, requiring an extensive extraction by Ambulance Tasmania and Tasmania Fire Service personnel.  She was transported to the Royal Hobart Hospital and was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.

The 40 year old male front passenger of the Commodore has been taken to hospital with abdominal injuries and remains in a stable condition.  Both vehicles were examined by Crash Investigation Services, Forensic Services and Hobart CIB, specifically in an effort to identify the occupants of the Magna.

Police are currently conducting investigations on a specific line of enquiry regarding their identity. A report will be prepared for the coroner in due course.

Police are particularly interested in hearing from any member of the public who may have observed the Grey Mitsubishi Magna prior to this incident or who have any knowledge as to the identity of the driver or passenger of this vehicle.
