Fatal Motorbike Crash Riverside, TAS

Crash Investigation officers are investigating the fatal motorbike crash involving a 16-year- old youth which occurred on the intersection of South Greenfield Drive and Ridgeview Crescent, Riverside earlier today, Tasmania Police say.

Initial investigations suggestions that speed and inexperience may have been factors in the crash.

The youth was riding a road/trail bike in the company of another rider. As they were approaching a roundabout it appears he lost control and collided with a street sign. He sustained fatal injuries and died shortly after arrival at the Launceston General Hospital.

A report is being prepared for the coroner.

"This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family at this time," said Acting Inspector Dean McMahon.

"Riding in urban areas is a dangerous past-time, which police would caution against. The loss of young lives devastates families, friends and communities.

"Following a similar incident in October last year, police have repeatedly warned of the dangers and appeal once again for young riders to slow down and drive to the conditions.  These tragic incidents did not have to occur," he said.
