Fatal Single Vehicle Crash Inside M8 Tunnel, St Peters

A driver has died after a single vehicle crash inside the M8 Tunnel.

About 10.15am today (Wednesday 13 May 2026), emergency services responded to reports that a vehicle crashed into the side wall of the M8 Tunnel, St Peters, in the west bound lanes before catching fire.

Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the blaze.

The driver of the vehicle died prior to the arrival of emergency services.

No other vehicles are believed to have been involved.

Officers from Inner West Police Area Command have established a crime scene and are awaiting the arrival of specialist police.

The M8 Tunnel is currently closed in both directions and is expected to remain a crime scene for a considerable amount of time. Motorists are urged to avoid the area.
