Fatal traffic crash in Cloncurry, QLD

Police are investigating following a fatal traffic crash involving a fuel tanker and a car west of Cloncurry this morning, Queensland Police say.

Preliminary investigations indicate at about 8.30am the car and tanker collided head-on along the Barkly Highway, resulting in a fire.

Human remains have been located in the burnt out fuel tanker which will need to be forensically examined in order for formal identification of the occupant to occur.

The 48-year-old male driver of the car sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital in a critical condition.

The Barkly Highway was closed in both directions at the time of the incident however has now re-opened with traffic control in place.

Motorists are urged to proceed with caution.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
