Fatal unit fire at Townsville

Police are investigating the circumstances of a fire at a Cranbrook unit block overnight.

Shortly before midnight, emergency services were called to a fire engulfing a unit on Orchid Street.

Forensic testing will be undertaken today to formally identify a body which was located in the unit.

Two other units within the complex were damaged as a result of the fire's spread; however, no other residents were injured.

A crime scene has been declared as investigations continue to determine the cause of the fire.
