Fifteen protective security officers inducted into new roles within the QPS

Acting Deputy Commissioner Gee with newly inducted SPSO, Queensland Police says

On Friday, December 15, three protective security officers (PSO) and 12 senior protective security officers (SPSO) were inducted into roles within the Protective Services unit of the QPS.

Six new recruits completed two weeks of fulltime training to become PSOs.

Three of these, as well as nine current serving PSOs, then completed a further week of training at the QPS Academy to become qualified SPSOs.

The graduating officers were joined by family and friends; Acting Deputy Commissioner Bob Gee; Protective Services Commander Superintendent Marcus Hill; Acting Superintendent Danny Shaw; Protective Services Director Maureen Kelly; Acting Inspector Melanie Wilkin; Acting Inspector Alex Hodge; and members of Protective Services Training Team, lead by Mr Peter Ingram, for a ceremony at the QPS Recreational Club.

The PSO course covered introduction to security; legislation; communication and ethics; operational procedures; occupant emergency programme and workplace health; and safety and evidence modules.

The SPSO course provides PSOs with further training on legislation; evidence; communications; ethics; emergencies; operational tactics; and supervision. Sworn/affirmed SPSOs have, in relation to a state building, all the powers and authorities of a police officer, except the power of arrest.

Protective Services provide protective security to people and property assets of the Queensland Government and have done so for more than 60 years. The commercialised business unit joined the QPS in late 2016.

You’ll see the friendly faces of PSOs and SPSOs in white shirts with maroon-based QPS emblems around schools, Queensland Cultural Centre, courthouses, government offices, events and other buildings across the state.

The graduating PSOs have taken their oath of service and very much look forward to starting their new careers in Brisbane.
