Final countdown to the Masters Games begins

Around 4000 athletes are flexing their muscles in Central Australian ahead of the official opening of the Alice Springs Masters Games this afternoon.

The Opening Ceremony kicks off at 5pm at Anzac Oval, offering up a great opportunity to size-up the competition while making new friends.

Competitors and spectators are in for a week of jam-packed fun with 36 different sports held across eight days, including three brand new sports on top of a fantastic program of entertainment and social events.

The 1986 Alice Springs Masters Games was only the second event of its kind to be staged in the world. The only previous multi-sport masters event was the first World Masters in Toronto, Canada in 1985.

The games will be held October 13-20, with the Opening Ceremony kicking off at 5pm today and the Closing Ceremony wrapping up celebrations on 20 October.
