Financial assistance for Tasmanian sports organisations

Jane Howlett,Minister for Sport and Recreation

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is determined to support grassroots Tasmanian sports organisations through these difficult times and will make available $2 million in grants to ensure their continuity through the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The grants program, announced today as part of the Tasmanian Government's Stimulus Package, will support the ongoing viability of Tasmania's peak sporting bodies over six months following the loss of revenues from the widespread cancellations of winter sporting competitions.

We are determined to keep our organisations fit and ready to recommence operations when it is safe to do so.

The grants will provide a short-term injection of funds to cover cash-flow shortages as a result of the loss of revenue, such as player registrations along with support for salaried staff of peak sporting bodies whose revenue streams have been effected by competition cancellations.

While maintaining employment is a key priority, we also want to ensure that the interruption to sports competitions doesn't lead to a long-term decline in participation.

I sincerely thank all Tasmanian sports organisations for their understanding and resilience during this challenging time.
