Fire restrictions are in force during the fire danger period. This means you cannot light a fire in the open air unless you have a permit or comply with certain requirements.
The fire danger period is declared by the Country Fire Authority (CFA) for each local government area during periods of increased fire risk. It depends on the amount of rain, the grassland curing rate, and other local conditions.
Using fire is restricted during the fire danger period, to help prevent fires from starting.
What's the difference between the fire danger period, and a total fire ban?
The fire danger period is different to a total fire ban. While both are declared by the CFA to restrict the use of fire, total fire bans are declared for the fire weather district for 1 or more days at a time, at any time throughout the year, on days when fires are likely to spread rapidly and be difficult to control.
As well as the fire danger rating, other factors such as current fires in the landscape, resourcing and increased likelihood for fires are considered when declaring total fire bans.
