Firearm Seizure At Nhulunbuy

The Northern Territory Police Force has seized a firearm in Nhulunbuy during routine firearms compliance operations on Sunday.

Police attended a residence in Nhulunbuy and spoke with a 39-year-old male who had recently relocated to the area and failed to notify police of his change of address, as required under the firearms licence. Police located the firearm unsecured, without compliant storage present, and seized it.

The male was issued with a Notice to Appear for:

  • Failure to meet storage requirements
  • Breach of firearms licence conditions

Acting Senior Sergeant Aaron Chapman from the Firearms Policy and Recording Unit said, "Firearms licence holders are legally obligated to ensure safe storage and maintain accurate licence particulars.

"The NT Police Force takes these obligations seriously, and breaches of the Firearms Act will result in enforcement action.

"This matter demonstrates the importance of compliance checks and highlights why safe storage is essential to community safety.

"We urge anyone with information about unsecured or illegal firearms to contact police on 131 444 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000."
