Firearms and drugs charges after vehicle stop, NSW

A man has been charged with firearm and drug offences following a vehicle stop in the Illawarra today, NSW Police say.

About 2.30am today, police from Lake Illawarra Local Area Command were patrolling George Street, Warilla when they stopped a blue Hyundai sedan for a random breath test.

After returning a negative result, officers then searched the car and located a shortened .22 calibre rifle, a holster, 38 rounds of ammunition, an imitation firearm and parts, as well as two clear resealable plastic bags suspected to contain methyl amphetamine and MDMA (‘Ecstasy’).

Officers later searched a home in Warilla where they located a baton and two more rounds of ammunition.

All items were secured for forensic analysis.

The 25-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station.

He was charged with possess shortened firearm, possess unregistered firearm, possess ammunition without holding licence (x2), possess prohibited weapon (x2), and possess prohibited drug (x2).

The man was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court tomorrow.
