· Key representatives come together for first meeting of Labor's Building, Construction and Infrastructure IAC

· Current and future infrastructure needs a focus for discussions

Maximizing the opportunities from Tasmania's current and future infrastructure projects was a key focus for Labor's Building, Construction and Infrastructure Industry Advisory Council (IAC) that met in Hobart yesterday.

The IAC was chaired by former Victoria/Tasmania Group General Manager of Toll Tasmania, Tony Stewart, who has more than 40 years' experience in the logistics and transport industry.

Shadow Minister for Roads and Infrastructure, David O'Byrne, said it was a positive first meeting.

"The committee brought together representatives from a number of industry groups and businesses including Engineers Australia, Housing Industry Association, the Master Builders Association, Tasmanian Transport Association, Civil Construction Federation, Australasian Institute of Architects and the Communication and Electrical Plumbing Union," Mr O'Byrne said.

"Some of the key issues raised were managing the pipeline of work to maximize the short, medium and long term benefits for Tasmania, ensuring that innovation and sustainability are front and central.

"The committee also discussed issues around the skilled workforce at the trainee, apprentice and graduate levels.

"This first meeting has set the groundwork for future meetings and positioning the IAC to make a substantial contribution to industry policy in Tasmania."
