First Nations Invited to Apply for Local Gov Scholarship

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander councillors and council staff are encouraged to apply for the Cr Pat Dixon Memorial Trust Scholarship, which aims to foster the career development of people serving their communities in local government.

Facilitated by Local Government NSW (LGNSW), this prestigious scholarship honours Cr Dixon, who was the first Aboriginal woman elected as a councillor in NSW.

Cr Dixon is remembered as a trailblazer for Aboriginal people working and serving in local government. She was a dedicated advocate for her community in Armidale, where she also served as Deputy Mayor.

The scholarship is offered annually through the Pat Dixon Memorial Scholarship Trust. It supports eligible Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander councillors and staff with financial assistance of up to $5,000 to support further study, research, or professional development.

LGNSW President Phyllis Miller OAM said Cr Dixon paved the way for Aboriginal people's representation in local government, leaving an amazing legacy not only for Aboriginal people, but also for women in the sector.

"There's an incredible depth of talent in local government right across the state. It's so important to support these leaders of the future to ensure that our councils reflect the rich and diverse communities they serve," Mayor Miller said.

"Fostering First Nations leadership through the Trust in Cr Dixon's name strengthens the sector for everyone," she said.

Last year, scholarships were awarded to three talented and impressive recipients.

Members of the Cr Pat Dixon Memorial Trust determine the scholarship recipients. For more details and to apply, visit the LGNSW website.
