Five-carat diamond stolen in Sydney

Police have released CCTV footage and are appealing for public assistance after the theft of an unset five-carat diamond in Sydney’s CBD on Tuesday, NSW Police say.

About 10am (19 September 2017), a man entered a jewellery store in Martin Place.

Police have been told the man viewed a five-carat diamond before allegedly swapping it for a stone that looked similar but of a lesser value.

The man then left the store.

Store employees contacted police when they noticed the stones had been switched.

A crime scene was established, which was forensically examined.

Officers attached to Sydney City Local Area Command are investigating and have released CCTV footage of a man who may be able to assist with inquiries.

The man depicted is described as being of Asian appearance with a slim build, and with short black hair.

He is shown wearing a grey jumper, dark-coloured pants, black Nike-brand sneakers, and carrying a shoulder bag.

Anyone with information in relation to this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
