The driver of the Kia, an 84-year-old man and his passenger, a 77-year-old woman, also sustained injuries.

The Volvo driver and the Kia passenger were both airlifted to Canberra Hospital. The driver of the Kia was taken to Canberra Hospital and the two children were taken to Cooma Hospital.

The children have since been released from hospital and the three adults remain in serious but stable condition.

The Monaro Highway, which police closed after the crash with contraflow and diversions in place, was re-opened at 6pm.
