Police saw a high level of compliance by cyclists and pedestrians during a one-day operation aimed at cyclist and pedestrian safety within the Sydney CBD and surrounding suburbs yesterday, NSW Police say.
Officers from the Traffic and Highway Patrol, along with officers from Sydney City and surrounding Local Area Commands, conducted Operation Pedro in the Sydney CBD yesterday.
The high-visibility operation ran from 6am to 6pm (Tuesday 5 December 2017) with a primary focus on non-compliance by cyclists for helmet use, and pedestrians not crossing safely.
Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy of the Traffic & Highway Patrol Command, said the aim of the operation was to raise awareness about road safety.
"Tragically, we have already seen 355 people die on our roads this year, including seven cyclists, and 52 pedestrians.
"We use operations like this to remind everyone to take personal responsibility for their actions in order to reduce the number of deaths on our roads.
"While most people obey road rules, it is disheartening to see that people continue to ride without a helmet or disobey pedestrian lights, despite the obvious dangers.
"We make no apologies for enforcing the rules as a deterrent for those who choose to put their own lives and the lives of others at risk," Assistant Commissioner Corboy said.
During the operation, the following infringements were issued:
Cyclists disobey traffic control lights – 59
Cyclists ride on footpath – 34
Cyclists not wear helmet – 56
Cyclists other offences – 11
Pedestrian offences – 70
Other traffic offences – 208
