Police are urging footy fans to plan their trip ahead of the A-League Sydney Derby at Sydney Olympic Park this weekend, NSW Police say.
Gates open from 6pm tomorrow (18 February 2017), when tens of thousands of fans are expected to descend upon ANZ Stadium before the Western Sydney Wanderers kick off against Sydney FC at 7.50pm.
General Duties police from South West Metropolitan Region will be assisted by specialist officers to maintain a high-visibility presence and ensure the safety and security of all officials, players and spectators before, during and after the much-anticipated match.
South West Metropolitan Region Commander, Acting Assistant Commissioner Dave Eardley, urged fans to keep the rivalry family-friendly this weekend and plan their journey ahead of time.
"The Sydney Derby has become one of the highest-profile matches in the A-League so we’re urging fans to make sure they enjoy the match in the true spirit of the game," Acting Assistant Commissioner said.
"We acknowledge it has attracted a healthy dose of team rivalry; however, we want to ensure people keep it friendly and safe so everyone can enjoy the game.
"Police have also been working closely with security, Football Federation Australia (FFA), and the respective clubs to maintain a fun atmosphere for all football fans – including families," Acting Assistant Commissioner Eardley said.
Given the significant crowds expected, ticket-holders are urged to plan their journey to the grounds ahead of time.
"The use of public transport is included in all match tickets so your best bet is to leave the car at home, and use the additional services on offer," Acting Assistant Commissioner Eardley said.
"Remember public transport is there for everyone to use and officers from the Police Transport Command will be patrolling the network to make sure everyone gets to and from the game safely.
"Also make sure you keep your ticket in a safe place for your journey home as you must have a valid ticket when travelling on public transport."
Trains will be running from Central Railway Station every 10 minutes from 5pm onwards until 9.30pm when frequent return services will begin.

"Those who must drive should allow extra travel time, expect delays and exercise patience when travelling out of the area – particularly at the end of the night as crowds disperse," Acting Assistant Commissioner Eardley said.
"Both drivers and pedestrians are reminded to be aware of your surroundings, watch out for your mates and only cross the road at designated traffic control points."
