Footy fever heats up in Launceston

Peter Gutwein,Premier

Tasmanian's have proudly embraced the biggest footy weekend ever in Tasmania as we host two thrilling elimination finals putting Tassie front and centre on the national sporting stage where we rightly belong.

Launceston and surrounds have been buzzing, with footy lovers traveling from all corners of the state to take part in the action providing a boost to small businesses and accommodation providers.

With two sold out games, the health and safety of Tasmanians is paramount which is why COVID-safe protocols will be strictly adhered to in hosting these AFL games.

Tasmania has demonstrated on multiple occasions that it can host AFL matches in a COVID-safe way, and important safeguards will remain in place this weekend including capped crowds of 10,000 people and the requirement for people to wear masks.

This blockbuster weekend tops off a great few weeks for football in Tasmania, with confirmation by Colin Carter that we should have a team of our own.

In addition, the AFL have confirmed that a historic decision will be made next year on whether Tasmania will have its own team, which now paves the way for us to conclude negotiations for the one-year rollover deals with both Hawthorn and the Kangaroos for next season.

Thank you to all the Tasmanians who have showed up loud and proud to prove once again to the AFL that Tasmania deserves a team of our own.
