Forestry Corporation is undertaking a hazard reduction burn in Cairncross State Forest, north-west of Port Macquarie, this week.
The low intensity burn across 1,100-hectares is one of the first hazard reduction burns on the Mid North Coast this spring with fire crews taking advantage of ideal weather conditions to safely reduce forest fuel loads.
Forestry Corporation Fire and Operations Team Leader – Northern Hardwoods Matt Model:
"This burn will treat forest fuel loads, which have built up after years of rain and vegetation growth and reduce the risk of more intense wildfires during extreme fire conditions while also supporting overall forest health," Mr Model said.
"Hazard reduction is a critical part of our role as land managers. In this case, reducing fuel loads will help protect key infrastructure including the Pacific Highway, a nearby waste treatment facility, important Aboriginal and cultural heritage sites, local businesses such as Ricardoes Tomatoes and several adjoining community assets," he said.
Forestry Corporation will continue to roll out its hazard reduction program throughout spring, as weather and conditions permit.
