Ararat Rural City Council acknowledges the passing of Edward (Ted) Millear, a former Mayor, Councillor, and respected community leader who passed away on Thursday, 25 September 2025 at the age of 93.
Ted was from Barton, Moyston and Barwon Heads and served the region with distinction as both Mayor and Councillor at Ararat Rural City Council and held roles with the Shire of Ararat, including that of President in 1992.
Ted was first elected to the Shire of Ararat from 1989 to 1994, then Ararat Council in March 1996, re-elected in 1999, and remained a Councillor until March 2002. His leadership included serving as Mayor from 1997 to 1998, guiding the community through an important period of local development and transition.
Ted was known for his commitment to public service, collaborative leadership, and genuine care for Ararat and its people. Over six years, he devoted his energy and vision to advancing local priorities and representing residents' interests with integrity and humility.
On behalf of the entire council, Mayor, Councillors, and staff, Ararat Rural City Council extends sincere condolences to Ted's family, friends, and colleagues during this time of loss.

Ted was a dearly loved husband of Jana for 68 years, a father, father-in-law and friend of Jenny and Chris, Mopsy and Rod, and Charlie and Susie. He was grandfather Ted to Sophie, Hamish, Annabel and Edward, Lucy, Harriet and Jock, and Anoushka and Claudia. He was a great-grandfather of 14.
The Funeral Service for Ted will be held at the Kings Funeral Chapel, 130 Bellarine Hwy. Newcomb, on Friday, October 10th at 2:00pm.
