Free dementia education for family carers in Port Macquarie

Are you caring for a lovedone who is living with dementia? Dementia Australia is holding a free familycarer education workshop for Port Macquarie residents.

There are an estimated 425,000people living with dementia in Australia and approximately 142,000 live in NewSouth Wales. It is likely you or someone you know is caring for someone livingwith dementia.

The aim of the education session is to providestrategies to families and friends involved in the care and support of someoneliving with dementia, enabling a healthy and respectful relationship to bemaintained through effective communication and understanding.

Day one topics include;

· Thenature of dementia

· Theimpact of dementia on the person and their carer

· Effectivecommunication activities

Day two topics include;

· Understandingand responding to behavior changes

· Communityservices and planning ahead

Carers who attend the course will also have theopportunity to meet with others who are sharing a similar experience, allowingtime to socialise and share important links to local support services.
