Fresh look at regulation a step in right direction

Business Council of Australia

The Business Council of Australia welcomes a review of Australia's environmental protection laws as an opportunity to maintain stringent environmental protections while reducing delays and streamlining our approach to regulation, Business Council chief executive Jennifer Westacott said.

"This review is a positive step towards more efficient regulation that can protect the environment while allowing businesses do what they do best - create new jobs.

"Poorly designed, dated regulation is a constraint on productivity and economic growth. Red and green tape costs Australians jobs. But environmental protection and major project approvals are not mutually exclusive.

"The review of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act is timely and will help strike this critical balance.

"We look forward to working with the government and review panel over the next 12 months to ensure the EPBC Act is efficient, relevant and can deliver the environmental standards that are important to businesses, farmers and all Australians while allowing the creation of new jobs."
