Regional Queensland will benefit from a frontline boost to community safety with 19 Queensland Corrective Services (QCS) officers graduating from the latest Foundations training.
The newly qualified officers are from Rockhampton, Toowoomba, Ipswich, Logan, Maroochydore, Brisbane South, Pine Rivers, Caboolture, Gold Coast, as well as in Brisbane Women's and Southern Queensland correctional centres.
Delivered by the Community Corrections & Specialist Operations Training Team at QCS Academy, the course provides QCS case managers and probation services officers with evidence-based training and real-world practices to support behaviour change, reduce recidivism to improve public safety.
The curriculum includes topics such as working with offenders with a history of domestic and family violence, cultural awareness training, trauma informed approach and brief interventions.
QCS is set to deliver seven Foundations programs in 2025, with up to 180 graduates expected by end of year.
Assistant Commissioner Community Corrections Samantha Newman said QCS was committed to building the capabilities of the agency and strengthening Queensland's frontline services.
"Community Corrections play a vital role in community safety, by helping offenders rehabilitate towards a crime-free life and thereby reducing reoffending," Assistant Commissioner Newman said.
"The 200 hours of centralised training at the QCS Academy means our officers have skills in evidence- informed case management and the latest learnings in behaviour change.
"Even short, focused efforts can lead to significant behaviour changes and reductions in reoffending and Foundations training focuses on the tools to help offenders move away from crime and onto a better path in life.
"By completing this nation-leading training, our case managers and probation services officers will be equipped with best practice skills in offender supervision."
