Baw Baw Shire Council has received funding agreements for four road safety projects thanks to the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) Safer Local Roads Local Roads and Street Program and the Federal Blackspot Program 2025/26.
Baw Baw Shire Council Mayor Danny Goss said road safety was an incredibly important issue.
"Council is committed to ensuring the safety of road users in Baw Baw Shire and we are very grateful for the support of the TAC and Department of Transport and Planning through the funding of these four important projects," he said.
"These locations have been identified as high-risk areas for road users. These works will help address existing road safety challenges and create a safer environment for our community."
Transport Accident Commission (TAC) Safer Local Roads Local Roads and Street Program
There are two projects that have been funded under the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) Safer Local Roads Local Roads and Street Program. These projects include works on Normanby Street, and on Crole Drive and Longview Road in Warragul.
Works on Normanby Street Warragul will take place on the section of road between, Queen Street and O'Dowds Road and will involve:
reducing the speed limit to 50km/h
installing raised safety platforms ("speed humps") on the approaches to the Albert Street roundabout to address the intersection's crash history
installing other raised safety platforms between Albert Street & Sutton Street to moderate speed consistent with the revised speed limit
Providing kerb extensions to improve visibility for traffic entering Normanby Street at the O'Dowds Road intersection
Additionally, the works on Crole Drive and Longview Road Warragul between Princes Way and Pharaohs Road will include:
providing a raised platform pedestrian crossing near Skyline Drive, linking to the reserve path
improving pedestrian crossing facilities and providing a slow-point chicane near Upland Drive
installing raised safety platforms near the Willandra Circuit roundabout and near Pharaohs Road
Both of these improvement projects have been through community consultation, and the improvements in Crole Drive/Longview Road have been the subject of community petitions and Council reports.
Design work is currently being finalised and works are expected to be completed early in the new year.
Federal Blackspot Program 2025/26
The two further projects are being funded under the Australian Government's Federal Blackspot Program 2025/26. These projects include works on Balfour Road Drouin, and the intersection of Burke Street Warragul and Lardners Track.
Works on Balfour Road Drouin, where there have been a number of crashes on the approach to Princes Way, will involve:
improving signing and delineation, including larger approach and curve warning signs
upgrading the guardrail to current standards
improving the pavement's resistance to skidding
The intersection of Burke Street Warragul and Lardners Track is identified as the location of a number of serious crashes, particularly at nighttime. Work at this location will include:
improving signing and delineation, including larger approach and T-junction warning signs
providing solar streetlighting
improving the pavement's resistance to skidding
These two projects are subject to significant school-related traffic volumes and works will be scheduled for the January school holiday period.
