Future Leaders Graduate From ADFA

Marking the completion of three years of university study and joint military training, 330 third-year Trainee Officers took to the parade ground for the final time at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) on December 11.

The graduating class of Royal Australian Navy Midshipmen, Australian Army and Royal Australian Air Force Officer Cadets, were joined by first and second-year colleagues for this year's Graduation Parade, together with 18 graduating international students representing eight countries.

Governor-General of Australia Sam Mostyn reviewed the parade and noted the important role the graduates would play as officers in the ADF and their respective countries.

"You have learnt to be leaders who will work for peace and stability. Who will make ethical and accountable decisions, who will prioritise human life and dignity, and will always act with compassion and care," the Governor-General said.

"You embody the ADF values of Service, Courage, Respect, Integrity and Excellence. I hope it is these values that will guide you throughout your careers, not as abstract ideals but as a foundation of trust, teamwork, service, loyalty and duty."

During the parade, the Governor-General presented the Commander-in-Chief's Award, recognising the most exceptional performance by a third-year Trainee Officer in the fields of academic and military achievement, leadership, personal example and performance of duty during their time at ADFA.

This year's recipient was Midshipman Sophie McPhail, who achieved a final grade of 100 per cent in her joint military education, qualifying her for Distinguished Graduate status.

'Today is a proud milestone for the families and friends of our graduates.'

Midshipman McPhail said she had always wanted a career where she could serve her country and community.

"I wanted a career where I would be constantly learning, growing and challenged as an individual and a leader and from a broader perspective," she said.

"ADFA has allowed me to meet a wide range of people, build long-lasting friendships and build my networking skills."

Midshipman McPhail said having a father and brother in the military shaped her decision to serve in the ADF.

"Growing up in a Navy family meant that I have been surrounded by Defence members and events," she said.

"Being able to see the lifelong friendships that my father has formed as a result of his service, as well as the variety of experiences he has had in his career, have certainly opened my eyes to the close-knit team environment that the ADF offers."

Witnessed by proud family members and friends, VIPs and distinguished guests, the parade was the perfect opportunity to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the graduating cohort.

ADFA Commandant Brigadier Troy Francis said graduation from ADFA was a significant milestone in a Trainee Officer's career, and a culmination of three years of dedication, hard work and service.

"These past three years at ADFA has equipped our graduates with resilience and adaptability, preparing Trainee Officers to lead effectively in complex, high-pressure environments," Brigadier Francis said.

"Today is a proud milestone for the families and friends of our graduates. We deeply appreciate their on-going support and encouragement, and hope they remain part of this journey as our graduates begin their careers in the wider ADF."
