Georges River residents are encouraged to remain vigilant against online fraud during Scams Awareness Week 2025, which runs from Monday 25 to Friday 29 August.
This year's theme, Stop. Check. Protect., urges individuals to pause and think carefully before clicking on links, sharing personal information, or transferring money.
In support of the campaign, Council is launching No Phishing in Georges River, a two-year cyber safety project aimed at reducing cyber security risks among vulnerable community groups including seniors, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, small business owners, and children and young people.
Funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Home Affairs Cyber Awareness Support for Vulnerable Groups Grant, the initiative will deliver targeted cyber literacy education programs, online campaigns, and scam awareness resources across the Georges River area.
The program will be delivered through annual workshops, digital campaigns and accessible resources, each tailored to address the specific needs of these groups.
Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, "We are committed to helping our community stay safe online. Through this program, we are equipping residents with the tools and knowledge to recognise and avoid scams, and to feel confident participating in the digital world."
To better understand how scams affect residents and local businesses, Council has launched a Your Say consultation. Feedback gathered will help shape future education and support initiatives, ensuring they meet the community's needs and enhance online safety.
