Georges River Memory Walk & Jog

Georges River Council

Georges River Council is proud to announce its recognition by Dementia Australia, as an organisation 'Working Towards Dementia-Friendly'. This important milestone will be officially launched during Dementia Action Week from 15–21 September 2025, with Council hosting its first Georges River Memory Walk & Jog.

This recognition highlights Council's commitment to creating a more inclusive, accessible, and supportive community for residents living with dementia and their carers. The Memory Walk & Jog will be the first dementia-friendly initiative that Council will deliver as a dementia-friendly organisation.

The theme for Dementia Action Week 2025 is 'Nobody can do it alone'. The Memory Walk & Jog is open to all ages and abilities. It features a 3.3 kilometre walk and a 6.6-kilometre jog, offering participants a chance to get active for a good cause. All funds raised will go directly to Dementia Australia, supporting counselling services, education, helplines, and research into finding a cure.

Participants can register as individuals or in teams, and the first 200 to register will receive a free event t-shirt, courtesy of Dementia Australia. The route is wheelchair accessible, with mild-to-moderate inclines and declines to accommodate varying mobility needs.

Adding to the community spirit, the Lugarno Lions Club will be serving a free BBQ, including bacon and egg rolls or a classic sausage sizzle for the first 400 registered participants. The first 400 registered will also receive a free coffee! The event is pet-friendly, and dog owners are encouraged to register their furry friends, who will receive a free bandana for the walk.

Mayor Elise Borg said, "This is a proud moment for Georges River Council as we work together with our community to create a safer and more supportive environment for people impacted by dementia.

"Becoming a dementia-friendly organisation is an important step towards greater inclusion, and we invite everyone to join us in walking, jogging, or simply supporting this meaningful cause."
