Gippy Girls Can Is Back In Baw Baw

Keen to try a new class at gym, heard about pickleball but don't know how to play, or feel like you need to be an expert to give that dance class a go?

Well, women and girls, September is nearly here and it's your chance to try those things you've been putting off in in a fun, supportive and accessible environment.

Baw Baw Shire Council is proud and excited to support Gippy Girls Can month, which celebrates and promotes inclusive and accessible physical activity for women and girls.

Gippy Girls Can will launch again in September 2026 and is dedicated to encouraging women and girls to get active in ways that feel welcoming, inclusive and completely pressure-free.

It's a region-wide initiative featuring activities and events across Gippsland local government areas, including Baw Baw. Everything is beginner-friendly, welcoming and either free or low-cost.

Whether you've been thinking about trying something new, want to meet people in your community, or are looking for an activity that fits around your life - there's sure to be something for you.

From gym classes to parkrun, pickleball and hockey, the variety of activities and the range of timeslots mean that everyone can have a shot at taking part if they want to.

Baw Baw Shire Mayor Cr Kate Wilson encouraged local women and girls to get involved, make the most of this month dedicated to women's sport and use the opportunity to grab a friend and try something new.

"This is such an important program to promote, it's a wonderful opportunity for women and girls in our community and the benefits are endless," Cr Wilson said.

"Gippy Girls Can encourages not only movement, which we know is so important for our mental and physical health, but it's also a chance to connect with others and try something new."

For years, Gippsland has run its own flavour of This Girl Can Week, a Gippsland-branded celebration of women getting active. In 2026, GippSport, Gippsland Region Public Health Unit, West Gippsland Healthcare and all six Gippsland LGAs have come together to take it further. A whole month instead of a week means more clubs, more communities and more flexibility for women to get involved in a way that suits them.
