Girls get hands-on with trades

Central Queensland girls will find out what it's like to be a tradie when they take part in a hands-on workshop with resource professionals.

Students from Moranbah and Dysart will explore trade career pathways in a girls-only workshop, while in Emerald both male and female students will experience trade-based activities from local resources sector tradies and apprentices.

The events, run by the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA) will be conducted at the Moranbah Coalfields Training Excellence Centre and Central Queensland University Emerald campus.

"It's important to show girls that many women are already enjoying fantastic careers as trades people and that they can follow in their footsteps," said Director Skills Education and Diversity for the Queensland Resources Council Katrina-Lee Jones.

"We are excited that we are finally seeing some movement in the trades occupations with women now making up 3.7 percent of tradespeople in our members' workforce."

"It would be great to improve on that result and it is through workshops such as these that pathways into a trade can be realised."

"We very much appreciate the support of BHP for these events, as industry engagement is key to the success of QMEA programs."

The QMEA is a partnership between the QRC and the Queensland Government under its Gateway to Industry Schools program. It has 60 schools throughout Queensland.
