Gisborne Botanic Gardens Fire Incidents

In response to recent reported fires at Gisborne Botanic Gardens:

Response attributable to Mayor Dom Bonanno, Macedon Ranges Shire Council:

Council was disappointed to have learnt about the recent fires at Gisborne Botanic Gardens. This reckless behaviour has caused unnecessary damage to one of our region's most cherished public spaces and had the potential to spread further and endanger properties and lives.

This is an active Victoria Police matter and we strongly encourage anyone who may have witnessed anything suspicious, or has any other relevant information on the matter, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit an online confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

More broadly, Council employs dedicated staff to care for the shire's three botanic gardens in Gisborne, Kyneton and Malmsbury, working in close partnership with the community-led 'Friends of' groups on their maintenance and improvement over time.

Council allocates regular budget towards the gardens – $50,000 each in 2025-26 – in addition to one-off funding for larger projects where applicable. Officers collaborate with 'Friends of' groups to identify and deliver meaningful upgrades, aligned with each garden's long-term master plan.

While we hope these recent fires are isolated incidents, Council will continue to work closely with Victoria Police and the Friends of Gisborne Botanic Gardens to regenerate the affected areas where possible, and on potential practical improvements to further improve safety in the gardens.
